Strength in a DC area heart community

Supporting children with congenital heart defects and their families.

We understand the pain, fear, and triumph of having a child with a heart defect or heart disease and firmly believe in the importance of providing support to others.

Mended Little Hearts of Washington DC (MLH DC) is a non-profit, volunteer-led organization that supports children, families, and caregivers impacted by congenital heart disease (CHD) to help them find their strength and stay informed.

Friendship and Community

Finding people to talk to about CHD can be hard. We have a variety of people who participate in MLH DC and can introduce you to parents with kids who have CHD (the same CHD as your child) or even teens or adults with CHD.  You can connect with them through email, phone calls, play dates, meetings, events, or our social media accounts.

Support for Hospital Stays

Hospital stays are emotionally fraught and physically demanding. We create “Bravery Bags” with basic supplies to make the stay a little easier. See the local news coverage of our Bravery Bags! We also have volunteers who will visit you at the hospital or that you can get in touch with to talk when you need it. On occasion, you’ll even find us bringing meals to the Children’s National Medical Center Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) or Heart and Kidney Unit (HKU) or Inova Fairfax Children’s Hospital.

Education

Technology and medical care are continually advancing, and staying informed can be a challenge, especially given the numerous opinions on the Internet. We help coordinate educational events with leading medical practitioners to stay informed and learn the latest research.
