Smith

Tricuspid Atresia

Smith was diagnosed with Tricuspid Atresia when I was around 20 weeks pregnant, but we knew from the nuchal ultrasound at around 12 weeks that he might have a heart defect. He had the typical 3 surgeries for a single ventricle baby - 1) BT Shunt at 10 days, 2) Glenn at 5 months, and 3) Fontan at about 2 years old. The BT Shunt was by far the toughest of all 3 surgeries. He was in the hospital for 56 days; was on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which is essentially life support, for 3 days; had a blood infection; and went on and off the ventilator 3 times. Somehow we made it through, but then were in and out of the hospital for eating issues over the next several months and ended up with a feeding tube. After the Glenn, he was pretty much a regular toddler and went to daycare while I went back to work. He’s now 6 years old and in 1st grade. He’s doing great! We have annual cardiology visits and the only medicine he takes is a baby aspirin everyday. He plays baseball, basketball, swims, and is reading and writing and meeting all his academic milestones. He’s on the smaller side - less than 10th percentile for height and weight - but other than the huge scar across his chest and a smaller scar on his neck, he seems like any other 6-year old.
